DIGGING ROOTS: Digging Roots is a JUNO Award winning family of musicians, anchored by Raven Kanatakta and Shoshona Kish. These leaders of new school rebel music have toured Canada, the US, and Europe, covering everything from intimate club settings to huge festival main stages. The group’s latest release, entitled We Are, features the Kanatakta’s tube-electrified acoustic guitars, Kish’s breathy seductive vocal textures, and the duo’s electrifying chemistry throughout the writing.

CRIS DERKSEN: Cris Derksen is a half-Cree, classically trained cellist whose captivating melodies and steadfast baselines have captured the attention of local and international audiences. She is a diverse musician, easily melding into hip-hop, rock, folk, country, or whatever type of music to bring an intense ball of musical passion to her work. Using a loop station and effect pedals, she is able to create an inspiring multi-dimensional auditory experience. She uses her voice in spoken word and song to layer melodies on top of each other to construct a song form in a way that is uncharted for most classical players. Using sounds from her inherited past Cris mixes the traditional with the contemporary over and over again in both the cultural world as well as the music sphere.

SONIA EIDSE: Sonia Eidse is a new singer-songwriter from Winnipeg. She started out singing in local talent shows and contests. Two years ago, she learned the guitar, and is now finding her own sound. Sonia has played at numerous events in the city, such as the 8 Days in May Festival with the Dusty Roads Band and Aboriginal Music Week. Her influences range from Nina Simone to Neil Young. This year, Sonia has recorded her first professionally recorded demo with Norman Dugas Productions.

DON AMERO: From the North End of Winnipeg, Amero has definitely faced his share of adversity. With poverty, gangs, drugs and violence as daily reminders of the harshness of the world, Don's life was nevertheless tempered by love, support and the knowledge that a Greater Power was intimately involved in his life. Shaped and molded by his coming of age, his music carries both the depth of experiencing hardship and the luminosity of experiencing hope. All who have the pleasure of listening to his music will no doubt leave with his encouraging message of positivity lifting their spirits.

Male Artist of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards, Amero is set to release his third album, entitled The Long Way Home.
