First group of artists announced for Aboriginal Music Week 2013

April 18, 2013

Derek Miller

Derek Miller, Digging Roots, Wanbdi, Ghostkeeper, the C-Weed Band, Indian City, and Arthur Renwick will be performing at Aboriginal Music Week this year. The festival will include six free concerts and four ticketed nightclub events. A total of 25 bands will be participating and it all happens in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

  • Derek Miller: A Six Nations-born rock god that draws capacity crowds every time he performs in Winnipeg.
  • Digging Roots: Leaders of new school roots/rock/rebel music, set to release a third album this summer.
  • Wanbdi: A gritty rock genius and sister of Indigenous’ Mato Nanji and The Bastard Fairies’ Yellow Thunder Woman.
  • Ghostkeeper: Alberta-based blues/pop band lead by Métis songwriter Shane Ghostkeeper.
  • C-Weed Band: Legendary country singer and recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards.
  • Indian City: Native “super group” put together by Eagle & Hawk founder Vince Fontaine.
  • Arthur Renwick: A university professor turned dobro slinging blues artist from Toronto.

This year marks the fifth anniversary for Aboriginal Music Week. The festival begins on August 16 and goes until August 21, which is a change from the November dates of years past.

“We’re limited to evening concerts at indoor venues during the winter months and that makes it harder for families to take in the music,” explains festival chairperson Alan Greyeyes. “We’re partnering with some great community groups this year to produce free outdoor concerts that families can walk to and I think that will make the festival more accessible to Aboriginal youth.”

Aboriginal Music Week will be partnering with Picnic In The Park and the Spence Neighbourhood Association on free community concerts set for August 17 and 18. Indian City will headline the first concert at St. John's Park and the C-Weed Band is the main attraction for Sunday's event at the Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre. Both events will include free BBQs, activities for kids, and a lot more great music.
