Aboriginal Music Week 2014

Aboriginal Music Manitoba is excited to announce the full lineup for Aboriginal Music Week 2014. The festival, now in it's sixth year, will include three big community celebrations, six workshops for youth, a lunch hour showcase, two big concerts at The Cube in Winnipeg's Old Market Square, two nightclub concerts, one film event, a series of music management consultations, and two of the only networking events for the Aboriginal music community in Canada.

Aboriginal Music Week 2014 is set for August 20 - 24 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The city is home to one of the largest Aboriginal communities in North America, some of the best First Nation and Métis musicians in the country, and media trailblazers like NCI FM and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.

There are a number of new additions to the festival this year. They include:

  • Two nights of free entertainment at The Cube in Old Market Square.
  • A big community celebration at the Turtle Island Neighbourhood Centre.
  • Music video screenings at the Cinematheque.
  • Music management consultations with Coalition Music for performers.

"We have a lot of momentum this year and we're expecting at least 10,000 people to attend the festival," says Aboriginal Music Manitoba chairperson Alan Greyeyes. "I'm really excited about the lineup because there are a number of great artists who will be making their Winnipeg debuts with us."

Anishinabemowin emcee Tall Paul, Apache violinist Laura Ortman, Diplo-approved music producer Astronomar, hip hop duo Mob Bounce, and Six Nations-born guitar slinger Logan Staats will be performing in Winnipeg for the very first time.

JUNO Award winners George Leach and Leela Gilday, Colombian music maverick Lido Pimienta, Stó:lō pop singer Inez Jasper, prehispanico music creator DJ Javier Estrada, the multiple award winning Eagle & Hawk, Métis fiddle legend Darren Lavallee, trip hop singer Iskwé, funk-rockers Burnt-Project 1, champion drum group Spirit Sands Singers, Métis fiddler Melissa St. Goddard, local party legends Primetime Empyre, Opaskwayak Cree Nation's DJ Miss Vee, cinematic electronic music producer Exquisite Ghost, Aboriginal rockers The Mosquitoz, up-and-comer Frannie Klein, and Rescued by Dragonflyz are also set to perform at the festival.

Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art will be screening music videos by First Nation, Métis, and Inuit artists at the Cinematheque on Thursday, August 21. The videos have been curated by Jenny Western.

Liam Killeen of Coalition Music will be attending the festival to provide business consultations and career advice to a select number of artists participating in the festival. Coalition Music manages the careers of Simple Plan, Our Lady Peace, Finger Eleven, Justin Nozuka, and many more. Killeen's time is being donated by the Music Managers Forum Canada.

The main goal of Aboriginal Music Week is to develop Aboriginal youth as an audience for live music. The Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre, Picnic in the Park, and the Spence Neighbourhood Association are the main community partners for Aboriginal Music Week 2014.
