The sākihiwē festival is partnering with Jazz Winnipeg to present iskwé on June 16 and Sebastian Gaskin on June 17 at Old Market Square in Winnipeg's historic Exchange District. The concerts are part of Jazz Winnipeg's opening weekend, and Aboriginal Music Manitoba (AMM) is using these performances to challenge stereotypes about Indigenous music, events, and people.

"I feel strongly that music presentation can serve as a counterbalance to the racist effects and intents of pop culture," explains AMM chairperson Alan Greyeyes. "I think we can reintroduce and reaffirm the humanity of Indigenous people by presenting incredible Indigenous artists, and we can amplify the impact of our efforts by partnering with Canadian presenters who have larger stages than us."

About iskwé

Bridging cross-cultural aesthetics while exploring her own struggle to both fit into and break away from modern Western archetypes has been an important part of iskwé’s artistic vision since the release of her Western Canadian Music Award (WCMA)-nominated self-titled debut album in late 2013. Her debut single, “Nobody Knows,” produced by JUNO Award nominees The Darcys and featured in the Netflix series Between, captivated audiences by turning a stark spotlight on the more than 1200 missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada.

About Sebastian Gaskin

Sebastian Gaskin is an emerging musician based out of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He started making music at 12 years old and quickly realized that music was an excellent outlet to express himself productively. He released his first project at 16 – an indie rock album titled The NoColor EP. His talent knows no boundaries, as he is now working on alternative R&B and hip-hop music, incorporating heart-thumping bass, wailing guitar solos, and powerful vocals that captivate his listeners.
