sākihiwē music Thursdays – Safe at Home Manitoba Series

The sākihiwē festival is working with NCI FM to take our new sākihiwē music Thursdays series for Safe at Home Manitoba to both online audiences and radio listeners across Manitoba. Each episode will be released on Thursdays from February 11 to March 25, 2021, and will feature four-song performances by artists from Winnipeg, Dauphin, Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN), and Garden Hill First Nation.

Inuit throat singer Nikki Komaksiutiksak and her daughters Chasity and Caramello will kick off the series on February 11. Country singer Desiree Dorion, the legendary C‐Weed Band, mezzo‐soprano singer Rhonda Head, singer/songwriter Billy Simard, fiddle master Patti Kusturok, and hip hop artist Mattmac round out the group.

The online episodes will be 30–45 minutes long and will premiere at 12:00 pm CST on the sākihiwē festival’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. They will feature a four-song performance and include a tour of the artist's neighbourhood or home community.

The radio episodes will be one hour long and will air in Manitoba at 7:00 pm CST. They will include audio from the artist’s four-song video performance, a playlist featuring songs by other Indigenous acts, and shoutouts to their Elders and extended family members across the province.

NCI FM reaches more than 80% of Manitoba, including 75 communities outside Winnipeg, with nearly 140,000 daily listeners. Please visit ncifm.com for more information.

About Aboriginal Music Manitoba

Aboriginal Music Manitoba (AMM) is a non-profit organization that presents, promotes, and nurtures Indigenous music and culture to build audiences at the community level and beyond. We do this by producing an annual music festival; producing capacity development projects; shining a spotlight on the accomplishments of Indigenous music makers and industry professionals; and by building bridges between the Indigenous music community and our counterparts around the world.

AMM is governed by a nine‐person volunteer board, which includes chairperson Brett Huson, vice‐chairperson Sandra Seidle, secretary Kimberly Cleave, and directors Rhonda Head, Ivana Yellowback, Jennifer Duka, Brendan Dong, and Rheanna Merasty.
