Ivan Spence (in memoriam)

The family of Ivan Spence are deeply saddened to announce his passing on July 20, 2021.

Ivan was born and raised in Eddystone, Manitoba. He married Verna on August 26, 1967 and raised his family in Winnipeg where he worked as a welder for over 40 years. He will be remembered for his traditional style of Métis fiddling. He recorded six CDs and played at many dances throughout the province. He was also very active as a square dancer into his senior years.

A respected Elder in the Métis community, Ivan was known for wisdom and patience and enjoyed people in a quiet, unassuming way. His most precious people were his grandchildren. He followed them everywhere they went - to hockey, soccer, swimming, skiing and any event that involved his grandchildren. He also played the guitar and accompanied them as they continued the tradition of Métis fiddling and jigging.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Verna, sons, Darryl (Karen) and Craig (Trina), grandchildren, Ryan, Clarissa and Taylor, siblings, Rene, Joseph, Freda (Lew), Andrew (Sam), Doris, Herman (Vivian), Lloyd, Bill (Svava), Vida (Terry), Corinne (Brian), and many nieces and nephews.
