The fifth annual Aboriginal Music Week will feature 10 concerts with performances by 25 Indigenous artists from Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. The festival is set for August 16 - 21 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Nick Sherman, Derek Miller, C-Weed Band, Leela Gilday, DJ Shub, Wanbdi, Leonard Sumner, Indian City, Ghostkeeper, DJ Javier Estrada, Clap Pina, Digging Roots, DJ Kiss, Jackson 2bears, Namowan, DJ Rahdil, DJ Miss Vee, Vince Fontaine & Jay Bodner, The D'Aoust Brothers, Norman Chief Memorial Dancers w/ Alex Lamoureux, Kristi Lane Sinclair, Young Medicine, Kim Erickson, and Arthur Renwick will be performing.

"We're working with some great community partners and taking the music to some of the neighbourhoods in Winnipeg that don't usually get to participate in festivals,” said Alan Greyeyes, festival chairperson.

“Winnipeg is jam-packed with festivals but there are a number of families that can't afford to buy tickets or drive out to festival venues, so we're going to produce a couple of big and free concerts for inner city communities,” said Greyeyes. The new community partners include Picnic in the Park; Spence Neighbourhood Association; Ndinawemaaganag Endaawaad; University of Winnipeg; and Winnipeg Folk Festival.

“With our new partners we are hoping to increase overall attendance at the festival by 2,000 people this year,” said Greyeyes. Festival attendance was close to doubling from 2011 to 2012 with just under 5,700 people taking in shows.

Tickets will go on sale on July 2. Advance purchases can be made online at aboriginalmusicweek.ca and in-store at the Canadian Plains Gallery (Suite 106-181 Higgins Avenue, Winnipeg).

Festival Passes are available online for $65 at aboriginalmusicweek.ca.
