Tributes to Willie Thrasher, Sugluk Band set for third episode of Honour Song
Honour Song – Episode 3: Tribute to Willie Thrasher & Sugluk Band (English)
Trilingual Inuit chanteuse Elisapie will pay tribute to the Sugluk Band and folk singer Willie Thrasher in the third episode of Honour Song. Presented by the sākihiwē festival and the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom, the hour‐long exchange will broadcast for free on the sākihiwē festival’s YouTube and Facebook channels on November 17 at 7:00 p.m. GMT / 1:00 p.m. CDT (set a YouTube reminder / RSVP on Facebook).
The episode will include performances by Willie Thrasher and Elisapie, along with conversations about the Sugluk Band, the poetic nature of the Inuktitut language, and Thrasher's experience in the music industry.
"I always feel like Inuit communities did a better job of retaining their language and traditions than most of us did in the south," explains Alan Greyeyes, Festival Director of the sākihiwē festival. "Willie Thrasher survived his Residential School experience and the Sugluk Band were some of the first artists to record music in Inuktitut, so I'm also excited to hear how Willie reconnected with his language and what kind of influence the Sugluk Band had on Elisapie."
iskwē paid tribute to the iconic Kinnie Starr in the first episode of Honour Song and PIQSIQ honoured the esteemed Susan Aglukark in episode two. Trailblazers for the fourth episode will be announced in the coming weeks.

Hommage à Willie Thrasher – Épisode 3 (Français)
La chanteuse inuite trilingue Elisapie rendra hommage au groupe Sugluk et au chanteur folk Willie Thrasher dans le troisième épisode de la chanson d’honneur. Présenté par le festival Sākihiwē et le Haut-Commissariat du Canada au Royaume-Uni, l'échange d'une heure sera diffusé gratuitement sur le site YouTube et sur les canaux Facebook du festival Sākihiwē le 17 novembre à 19 h GMT / 13 h 00 CDT (fixer un rappel sur YouTube / RSVP sur Facebook).
L'épisode comprendra des représentations de Willie Thrasher et d'Elisapie, ainsi que des conversations sur le groupe Sugluk, la nature poétique de la langue Inuktitut et l'expérience de Thrasher dans l'industrie de la musique.
"J'ai toujours l'impression que les communautés inuites ont mieux réussi à conserver leur langue et leurs traditions que la plupart d'entre nous dans le sud", explique Alan Greyeyes, directeur du festival Sākihiwē. "Willie Thrasher, un artiste qui a survécu à son expérience en école résidentielle, nous parlera de la manière dont il a renoué avec sa langue, et je suis également intéressé par l'influence que le groupe Sugluk a eue sur Elisapie."
iskwē a rendu hommage à l'icône Kinnie Starr dans le premier épisode de la chanson d’honneur et PIQSIQ a honoré la très estimée Susan Aglukark dans l'épisode deux. Les pionniers du quatrième épisode seront annoncés dans les semaines à venir.
