The Aboriginal Music Week 2010 Lineup

Winnipeg, MB – Aboriginal Music Week 2010 (AMW2010) is set for October 29 - November 6 in venues throughout downtown Winnipeg. Eight concerts and one film event are on the agenda for the second annual music festival.

The artists include award winning Métis fiddler Darren Lavallee, 2009 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award runaway Inez Jasper, local blues legend Billy Joe Green, Toronto based hip hop artist Plex, Last Gang Records’ Kinnie Starr, innovative cellist Cris Derksen, Inuit throat singer Tagaq, and Don Amero (Male Artist of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards). Native American filmmaker Sterlin Harjo will also be on hand for a screening of Barking Water, an Official Selection of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, on November 6.

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

• Concert tickets can be purchased and printed on the www.aboriginalmusicweek.ca website.

• Tickets are just $5 for the family concerts at the West End Cultural Centre on November 2, 3, and 4.

• Acts are coming to Winnipeg from Chilliwack, Yellowknife, Pic River, Toronto, Vancouver, Phoenix, Ottawa, and Little Saskatchewan.

• The "Year of the Métis" will be celebrated on October 29 at the Skyview Ballroom with the Métis Jamboree, presented by Travel Manitoba. Elders and children under 8 years of age will be admitted to the Métis Jamboree free of charge.

• Innovative Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq will be performing at the Pyramid Cabaret on November 5.

Aboriginal Music Manitoba Inc. would like to acknowledge the financial support of the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Winnipeg Arts Council, Manitoba Culture, Heritage, and Tourism, and the SOCAN Foundation. The AMW2010 sponsors and event partners are CBC Radio One & CBC Radio 3, Travel Manitoba, Grassroots News, Visual Lizard, and Redworks Studio.

Aboriginal Music Manitoba Inc. is a non-profit organization, governed by an eight-person Board of Directors. The board members are Alan Greyeyes, Lisa Meeches, Waubgeshig Rice, Jacques St. Goddard, Jaimie Isaac, David Robertson, Teresa Clifton, and Kim Ziervogel. The organization has produced a Manitoba Métis music and dance tour for the 2009 Cultural Olympiad, and Aboriginal events for the Western Canadian Music Awards and the JUNO Awards.
